This episode Charelle and Karina start off by each sharing one of their favourite queer stories. This started off with a top 5 list, but it quickly became clear that it would need to be at least a top 10 - for Karina anyway.
Karina started off with Semantic Error and Charelle is currently obsessed with Call Me by Your Name (and Timothee Chalamet) so that was her choice.
On to the main topic of this episode: amazing parents and shit parents in queer stories. A few visuals to add to your listening experience.
Olivia Colman is just so lovely in this role. So sad she’s not coming back for Season 3.
Delightful. Amazing parents also discussed were Pi’s parents (and eldest brother) in Fish Upon the Sky (Thai), Stef & Lena from The Fosters (USA), Jack Pearson from This Is Us (USA).
And on to the shit parents.
Shit parents that didn’t make it into the episode include; Xi Zhou’s dad in Plus & Minus (Taiwan) who is very homophobic and although he does come around at the end, Karina can’t forgive him for the heartache he causes Xi Zhou and Li Gong.
Michael Groff from Sex Education (UK). Although his character (as all the characters in this show) is shown from a sympathetic viewpoint, he really is the worst father to Adam, who just needs to be loved and has a big heart hiding under all the trauma.
As always, thanks for listening!
